About Hivemind
What it does
Hivemind is a shared memory layer for coding agents, built by Activeloop on its Deeplake storage. It captures each session's prompts, tool calls and responses as structured traces, lets agents search that history later, and runs background workers that summarise sessions and turn repeated patterns into reusable SKILL.md files. The aim is that a solution one teammate's agent found becomes available to every connected agent on the team.
What is inside
Integration is done through hooks or plugins per host: session start, prompt submission, tool results and session end are captured automatically, and recall tools (search, read and index) are exposed to the agent. Retrieval mixes lexical and semantic search. A virtual filesystem backed by SQL handles the memory folder, session summaries become wiki pages, and codified skills are scoped to a workspace. Capture can be turned off per session with an environment variable or per directory with a marker file. Storage defaults to Hivemind Cloud, with bring-your-own-cloud options for GCS and Azure and S3 on request.
Works with
Claude Code (marketplace plugin), Codex and Cursor through hooks, plus OpenClaw, Hermes, Pi and Claude Cowork in alpha.
How to install
The npm route avoids piping a script to the shell; it needs Node 22 or newer:
npm i -g @deeplake/hivemind && hivemind install
In Claude Code you can instead use the plugin marketplace:
/plugin marketplace add activeloopai/hivemind
/plugin install hivemind
Maintenance and safety
The client is Apache-2.0 licensed and very actively maintained. The important caveat is that full session traces, which can include code and secrets, are sent to a hosted service after you sign in; review the security section, use the capture switches, and consider the bring-your-own-cloud option for sensitive work. Benchmark figures in the README come from the vendor's own evaluation.
Who should use it
Teams running several coding agents across machines who want shared, searchable history and automatically generated skills, and who are comfortable with a cloud account. Solo developers wanting purely local memory may prefer a local-only tool.
Pros
- Automatic capture and recall across several agents and machines
- Mines traces into reusable SKILL.md files
- Per-session and per-directory capture switches
Cons
- Full session traces go to a hosted service unless you set up your own cloud storage
- Benchmark claims come from the vendor's own evaluation
