About Pi Interactive Subagents
What it does
pi-interactive-subagents is an extension for the Pi coding agent that lets the main session spawn subagents in separate terminal multiplexer panes without blocking. A call to start a subagent returns immediately, the child runs in its own pane, and when it finishes its result is fed back into the main conversation as a notification that triggers a new turn. You can keep chatting with the main agent, or step into a subagent's pane and work with it directly.
What is inside
The extension adds tools to spawn, interrupt, list and resume subagents, plus commands for a planning workflow, a quick fork for fixes, and spawning a named agent. It bundles five agent definitions: a planner, a fast scout for codebase reconnaissance, a worker that implements tasks and commits, a reviewer, and a visual tester that drives Chrome. A live widget above the input shows each subagent as starting, active, waiting or stalled, based on status snapshots written by the child, and a watchdog alerts the parent when a run stops reporting. Project-level or global agent files override the bundled ones, and spawns can fork the full context or start fresh.
Works with
Pi only. It is not a Claude Code or Codex add-on, and the README notes that Claude-backed subagent runs are not supported. It needs cmux, tmux, zellij or WezTerm.
How to install
pi install git:github.com/HazAT/pi-interactive-subagents
Then start Pi inside a multiplexer, for example tmux new -A -s pi 'pi'.
Maintenance and safety
MIT licensed, with detailed documentation of status handling and configuration. Commits have slowed since spring 2026, so check recent activity against your Pi version. Subagents run with Pi's normal permissions and the worker agent is designed to commit code, so review its output as you would any agent change.
Who should use it
Pi users who want parallel, observable subagents they can watch and steer in terminal panes. Users of other coding agents should look elsewhere, since it relies entirely on Pi's extension API.
Pros
- Subagents run in visible panes and report back without blocking the main session
- Bundled planner, scout, worker, reviewer and visual tester agents
Cons
- Works only with Pi, not with any app in the directory
- Commit activity has slowed since May 2026
