About Subtask
What it does
Subtask, by zippoxer, gives Claude Code a skill and a command-line tool for running work in parallel. Claude drafts tasks, spawns subagents to do them, tracks their status, reviews the code and asks whether to merge or request changes. Each task gets its own Git worktree, so several can run at once without stepping on each other, and Claude can interrupt or message a running subagent.
What is inside
The subtask CLI creates, lists and tracks tasks, and stores each one in a folder so state survives restarts. Running subtask alone opens a terminal UI that shows progress, diffs and conversations for every task. The skill teaches Claude how to use the CLI, and an optional Claude Code plugin reminds it to use the skill when it calls the tool. During setup you choose whether subagents run Claude, Codex or OpenCode. subtask update handles upgrades, and subtask update --check reports whether a new version is available.
Works with
The lead agent is Claude Code. Subagents can be Claude Code, Codex or OpenCode.
How to install
brew install zippoxer/tap/subtask
subtask install
/plugin marketplace add zippoxer/subtask
/plugin install subtask@subtask
Maintenance and safety
MIT licensed. The README says it is in early development and that known bugs remain; the last push was in April 2026. The main install path is a script piped to the shell from the project's own domain, so the Homebrew, Go or release-binary options are easier to audit. Subagents run with their own tool permissions inside worktrees, so review diffs before merging.
Who should use it
Claude Code users who want to split a backlog into parallel branches and keep one lead session in charge of review and merging. Teams that already manage worktrees by hand may find it a convenient layer on top.
Pros
- Each task isolated in its own worktree
- TUI shows progress, diffs and conversations
- Subagents can be Claude, Codex or OpenCode
Cons
- Self-described early development with known bugs
- Default installer is a curl-to-shell script
