About arXiv MCP Server
What it does
arxiv-mcp-server, maintained by blazickjp, is a local MCP server for working with arXiv papers from inside an agent. It is built around a reading loop rather than bulk search: take a paper ID, fetch its outline, read one section, then follow citations. Papers are stored on disk, and the server can read the author-submitted LaTeX source section by section, which keeps equations and structure intact.
Tools it gives your agent
Search and metadata come from search_papers and get_abstract. download_paper, list_papers and read_paper handle local copies, with output capped by default so a paper does not flood the context. get_paper_outline, read_paper_section and search_paper_text work on converted Markdown, while get_paper_latex, list_paper_latex_sections and get_paper_latex_section work on the original LaTeX. citation_graph pulls references and citing papers from Semantic Scholar, and export_citations produces BibTeX from arXiv metadata. watch_topic, list_watches, check_alerts and unwatch_topic manage saved topic alerts. An optional extra adds semantic_search and reindex over downloaded papers. A bundled research skill is included in the plugin packages.
Works with
Any MCP client that can launch a stdio server. The README gives recipes for Claude Code, Codex, Kiro, VS Code, Cursor and Claude Desktop, plus plugin packages for Claude Code and Codex.
How to install
uvx arxiv-mcp-server
claude mcp add --transport stdio --scope user arxiv -- uvx arxiv-mcp-server
Maintenance and safety
Apache-2.0, published on PyPI and the official MCP registry, with tests in CI and recent releases. The README warns that paper text is untrusted and may contain prompt injection, and that the HTTP mode should stay private. An unrelated npm package uses the same name, so install through uvx, not npx.
Who should use it
Developers building ML features, writing technical docs or implementing algorithms from papers who want their agent to read sources and cite them properly.
Pros
- Reads original LaTeX one section at a time
- BibTeX export and citation graph tools
- Bounded outputs keep context small
Cons
- Mainly useful for research-heavy work rather than everyday coding
- Paper text is untrusted input that can carry prompt injection
