Built on the open MCP standard, so it works in every app that supports MCP.

About Gemini Mcp Tool

What it does

Gemini MCP Tool is an MCP server that lets Claude (and other MCP clients) hand off large-context work to Google's Gemini backend. When a codebase or file set is too big for the calling model's own context window, Claude can delegate the analysis to Gemini through this server and get a synthesized answer back, instead of truncating files or skipping context.

Tools it gives your agent

  • ask-gemini — sends an analysis request to Gemini, with @file syntax to attach specific files or whole directories
  • sandbox-test — runs generated code in an isolated sandbox before it touches your project
  • Slash commands /analyze, /sandbox, /help and /ping for direct, non-agentic use
  • Configurable Gemini model selection (defaults to gemini-2.5-pro)

Works with

Built for Claude Code and Claude Desktop; the MCP protocol means any other MCP-compatible client can add it too, though it's only tested against Claude.

How to install or connect

claude mcp add gemini-cli -- npx -y gemini-mcp-tool

Or add it to claude_desktop_config.json directly:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "gemini-cli": { "command": "npx", "args": ["-y", "gemini-mcp-tool"] }
  }
}

Maintenance and safety

MIT-licensed, unofficial and not affiliated with Google, with 2,200+ stars and active issue traffic. Important: Google retired the standalone Gemini CLI on 18 June 2026 in favor of the Antigravity CLI; this tool now defaults to the Antigravity backend, and only accounts still on an unaffected enterprise/paid tier should set GEMINI_MCP_BACKEND=gemini to keep using the original CLI path.

Who should use it

Claude Code or Claude Desktop users hitting context limits on large repos or file sets who want a second, high-capacity model to summarize or analyze them without leaving their existing workflow.

mcp gemini claude-code codebase-analysis context-window

Pros

  • Offloads large-file/codebase analysis outside Claude's own context window
  • One-line install via the Claude CLI
  • Actively maintained, MIT licensed

Cons

  • Depends on the now-retired Gemini CLI; defaults to the newer Antigravity backend
  • Only tested against Claude clients despite being a generic MCP server
