About Ha Mcp
What it does
ha-mcp is an unofficial Model Context Protocol server for Home Assistant. It lets AI assistants query and control a Home Assistant smart-home instance in natural language — checking device states, calling services, and managing the automations, scripts and dashboards that make up a home automation setup.
What is inside / Tools it gives your agent
The server exposes 92+ tools grouped into six areas: Search (entity lookup, configuration search, system overview), Control (service calls, bulk device operations, state monitoring), Manage (automations, scripts, helpers, dashboards, areas), Monitor (history, statistics, camera feeds, automation traces), System (backups, updates, add-ons, device registry) and multi-client session handling.
Works with
Listed as "*" for any MCP-capable client; the project's own docs go further and list 15+ specific integrations, including Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Cursor and GitHub Copilot.
How to install or connect
The recommended path is installing a custom Home Assistant integration via HACS, then adding it under Settings → Devices & Services inside Home Assistant, which exposes an MCP endpoint your client connects to. Standalone install scripts are also provided for macOS, Linux and Windows for connecting straight to Claude Desktop or claude.ai.
Maintenance and safety
MIT licensed and actively developed, with 4,700+ GitHub stars and near-daily commits. It talks to your existing local Home Assistant instance rather than a third-party cloud service, so control stays on your own network unless you deliberately expose it remotely; access is gated by your Home Assistant authentication. It's a community project, not built or maintained by the Home Assistant core team.
Who should use it
Home Assistant users who want to manage their smart home conversationally from an AI assistant or coding agent — asking it to turn things on or off, review automations, or debug why a scene didn't fire — without hand-writing YAML or hunting through the UI.
Pros
- 92+ tools spanning search, control, automation management, monitoring and system administration
- Runs against your own local Home Assistant instance, no third-party cloud dependency required
- Documented to work with 15+ AI clients, including Claude Desktop, Claude.ai, ChatGPT, Cursor and Copilot
Cons
- Setup requires installing a custom HACS component plus configuring Home Assistant integration
- Unofficial community project, not maintained by the Home Assistant core team
