What it does

Neon MCP is Neon's official server for managing serverless Postgres from a chat or coding agent. An agent can create a project, open a branch, design tables, run SQL and check slow queries. Its standout feature is safe migrations. The agent first applies a schema change to a temporary branch, where you can test it, and only then merges it into your main branch. The server is MIT licensed and hosted by Neon at mcp.neon.tech. Neon states clearly that it is meant for local development and IDE use, not for production.

Tools it gives your agent

• Projects and branches: list, create and delete projects and branches, reset a branch from its parent, and manage snapshots
• Querying: run_sql, run_sql_transaction, get_connection_string, and table and schema inspection
• Migrations: prepare_database_migration and complete_database_migration, plus compare_database_schema
• Performance: list_slow_queries, explain_sql_statement, inspect_database, and query tuning on a branch
• Other: Neon Auth setup, compute endpoints, docs search, and categories for data API, functions and storage

Works with

It is a remote server using Streamable HTTP, with a deprecated SSE fallback. Neon has guides for Claude Code, Cursor, Claude Desktop, Cline, Windsurf, Zed, VS Code and Kiro, and any client that supports remote MCP servers can connect.

How to connect

Set up Neon's MCP server, skills and editor config in one step (Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code):

Cost and limits

The server is free. You need a Neon account. At the time of writing (September 2026), the Free plan includes up to 100 projects, 100 CU-hours of compute per project and 0.5 GB of storage per project, with no card required. Paid plans are billed by usage.

Safety notes

Add ?readonly=true to the URL, or untick "Allow writes" when you sign in, to drop every write tool. In read-only mode, run_sql also accepts only read queries. You can limit the agent further with projectId and category. Neon recommends reviewing every action before it runs. With OAuth, the server acts on your personal projects unless you name an organization.
