About shadcn/ui MCP Server
What it does
shadcn-ui-mcp-server, by Janardhan Polle, gives an AI agent direct access to shadcn/ui component source, demos, blocks and metadata. Instead of guessing how a component is built or which dependencies it needs, the agent fetches the current code from the upstream repositories. It supports four implementations: shadcn/ui for React, shadcn-svelte, shadcn-vue and react-native-reusables, and for React it can switch between Radix UI and Base UI primitives.
Tools it gives your agent
list_components and get_component return the component list and source code. get_component_demo returns example usage, and get_component_metadata returns dependencies and descriptions. list_blocks and get_block cover complete blocks such as dashboards, calendars and forms. get_directory_structure lets the agent browse the upstream repository layout. Framework and primitive library are chosen with the --framework and --ui-library flags or matching environment variables. Results are cached to reduce GitHub API calls.
Works with
Any MCP client. The README documents Claude Code, Claude Desktop through an .mcpb bundle, VS Code, Cursor and Continue. It runs over stdio by default and can also serve SSE for several clients at once, including from Docker.
How to install
npx @jpisnice/shadcn-ui-mcp-server
claude mcp add shadcn -- bunx -y @jpisnice/shadcn-ui-mcp-server --github-api-key YOUR_TOKEN
Maintenance and safety
MIT licensed and published on npm. The last push was in May 2026, so it is maintained but not moving fast. It reads public GitHub data; without a token you hit the low anonymous rate limit quickly, so the README recommends a personal token with no scopes. When running in SSE mode, the default host binding is all interfaces, so restrict it on shared networks. shadcn now offers its own registry tooling for agents, so compare the two before choosing.
Who should use it
Front-end developers using shadcn/ui, or one of its Svelte, Vue or React Native ports, who want their agent to generate components that match the real source rather than an outdated memory of it.
Pros
- Covers React, Svelte, Vue and React Native ports
- Fetches real upstream source instead of model memory
- stdio, SSE and Docker options
Cons
- Needs a GitHub token to avoid low rate limits
- Overlaps with shadcn's own agent tooling
