About Claude Code Hooks

What it does

Claude Code Hooks is a reference project that wires a small script to every Claude Code hook event so the agent gives you audible and visual feedback as it works. In the author's default setup you hear a sound on session start, a mouse-click sound on PreToolUse, a keyboard sound on PostToolUse, and a spoken message on other events, so you know when Claude is running a tool, finished a turn, or waiting on you without watching the terminal. The main value is as a worked example: the repository documents all of Claude Code's hook events, with the tool version each was added in and the fields each one receives, which makes it a handy map when you want to write your own hooks.

What is inside

  • Ready-to-copy hook scripts in .claude/hooks/ and a settings.json fragment that registers them
  • A HOOKS-README.md that lists every documented hook event, its trigger, and its payload fields, and flags the few events that appear in the changelog but not the official reference
  • Platform install guides for macOS, Linux and Windows, and a demo agent file for testing the subagent-scoped hooks
  • A changelog tracking which hooks were added in which Claude Code release

Works with

Claude Code only. The scripts use Python 3 and, on macOS, the built-in afplay for sound. The author maintains separate companion repositories for Codex CLI and Gemini CLI hooks.

How to install

mkdir -p .claude/hooks
git clone https://github.com/shanraisshan/claude-code-hooks.git temp-hooks
cp -r temp-hooks/.claude/hooks/* .claude/hooks/
rm -rf temp-hooks

Then copy the disableAllHooks and hooks keys from the platform settings.json into your own .claude/settings.json and start Claude.

Maintenance and safety

MIT-licensed. The latest commits are from mid-2026 and track a specific Claude Code version, so the hook list can fall behind newer releases. The scripts only play sounds and are easy to read before you run them; requires Python 3 on your PATH.

Who should use it

People who want ambient audio cues while Claude Code runs, and anyone learning the hook system who wants a complete, annotated example to copy from.

hooks claude-code notifications reference python

Pros

  • Documents all hook events with their trigger and payload fields
  • Ready-to-copy scripts and a settings fragment for macOS, Linux and Windows
  • Useful template for writing your own hooks

Cons

  • Hook list is pinned to a Claude Code version and can lag newer releases
  • Only adds sound and voice feedback, not deeper automation
