What it does

The MATLAB MCP Server is MathWorks' official way to let AI coding agents use a local MATLAB installation. The agent can start or attach to MATLAB, run code snippets or whole .m scripts, run unit tests and check code with MATLAB's static analyser. It gets the real output back, so it can write MATLAB, execute it, read the errors and fix them itself. The server also provides MathWorks' coding guidelines and the rules for the plain-text Live Script format as MCP resources, so the generated code follows house style. You can connect it to a MATLAB session you already have open with shareMATLABSession(), which lets the agent work alongside you. MathWorks also publishes MATLAB and Simulink agentic toolkits with skills, and these can install the server for you.

Tools it gives your agent

• detect_matlab_toolboxes lists the installed MATLAB version and toolboxes
• check_matlab_code runs read-only static analysis for style, errors, deprecated functions and performance
• evaluate_matlab_code runs a code string in a given project folder
• run_matlab_file runs a script
• run_matlab_test_file runs a MATLAB unit-test file and returns the results
• Custom tools can be added through JSON extension files

Works with

It runs locally over stdio as a Go binary for Windows, Linux and macOS. The README has setup instructions for Claude Code, Claude Desktop (as an .mcpb bundle), GitHub Copilot in VS Code, and Codex. Any MCP client can run it.

How to connect

Download the release binary for your platform, then add it to Claude Code:

claude mcp add --transport stdio matlab -- /fullpath/to/matlab-mcp-server-binary

Cost and limits

The server costs nothing, but it needs a licensed MATLAB installation, R2021a or later. Connecting to an existing session needs R2023a or later, and plain-text Live Scripts need R2025a. Its licence restricts use to MathWorks products, and one server cannot be shared by several users.

Safety notes

The agent can run any MATLAB code with your permissions, including file and system calls. MathWorks advises reviewing each tool call and keeping a human in the loop for important actions. Use --initial-working-folder to start MATLAB in your project. Anonymous usage data is sent to MathWorks by default. Turn it off with --disable-telemetry=true.
