What it does

n8n-MCP helps a coding agent build n8n automation workflows that actually run. On its own, an agent tends to guess node names and parameters and produce workflow JSON that breaks at runtime. This server gives it a searchable local database of n8n's core and community nodes, including property schemas, operations, documentation and real configuration examples, plus a library of more than two thousand workflow templates. The agent can look up the right node, check a configuration against the schema, and validate an entire workflow, including connections and expressions. If you also give it your n8n API URL and key, it can create, update, test, auto-fix and manage workflows and executions on your instance. It is an independent community project, not built by n8n GmbH.

It is self-hosted over stdio with npx or Docker, or in HTTP mode, including on Railway. A hosted version is also available at dashboard.n8n-mcp.com. The docs have setup guides for Claude Code, VS Code Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, Codex and Antigravity. A companion n8n-skills repo adds Claude skills.

Cost and limits

Self-hosting is free under the MIT licence. The hosted dashboard has a free tier of 100 tool calls per day, and paid plans cover heavier use. Any n8n Cloud costs are separate.

Safety notes

The author warns you never to let AI edit production workflows directly. Work on copies and keep backups. With an API key, the agent can delete workflows and read credentials. Use DISABLED_TOOLS or DISABLED_TOOL_OPERATIONS to remove write and sensitive tools. Telemetry is on by default and the data may be used to train models. Turn it off with npx n8n-mcp telemetry disable or N8N_MCP_TELEMETRY_DISABLED=true.
