What Vibe Coding Costs per Month in 2026: Plans, API Usage and the Free Ecosystem

"How much does vibe coding cost?" has no single answer. It depends on which app you use, how many hours a day you prompt, and whether you pay a flat subscription or per token. The good news is that the ecosystem around the apps, meaning skills, subagents and most MCP servers, is almost entirely free.

This post sets out the price building blocks and then prices three realistic setups. Every price below was checked on the vendor's own pricing page at the time of writing (September 2026). Prices in this market change often, so check the vendor page before you buy. Where a vendor page didn't show a clear figure, we describe the plan without a number. Hosting, domains and databases for the app you build are extra and not covered here.

The three ways you pay

  1. Flat subscription. A monthly fee with usage limits that reset on a schedule. Predictable, and usually the cheapest option for heavy interactive use.
  2. API usage. You pay per million tokens (MTok) in and out. No cap, no reset, and the bill tracks exactly what you use. Common for automation, CI and teams that want central billing.
  3. Credits on top. Most subscriptions now let you keep working past your limit by buying credits or turning on extra usage at API rates. Handy, but it's where surprise bills come from.

Subscription plans at the time of writing

Claude (Claude Code)

Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan, sharing the plan's usage limits.

PlanPrice (September 2026)Notes
Free$0Claude Code not included
Pro$20/month, or $17/month billed annually ($200 upfront)Entry point for Claude Code
MaxFrom $100/monthChoose 5x or 20x more usage than Pro; the 20x option costs more than the $100 starting price
Team, standard seat$25/seat/month monthly, $20 annually2–150 people; more usage than Pro
Team, premium seat$125/seat/month monthly, $100 annually5x the usage of a standard seat
Enterprise$20/seat/month billed annually, plus usage at API ratesCost scales with models and tasks

Paid plans can also turn on usage credits to keep working at standard API rates after hitting a limit.

ChatGPT (Codex)

Codex is included in ChatGPT plans. OpenAI's Codex pricing page lists:

PlanPrice (September 2026)Codex usage as described by OpenAI
Free$0Quick tasks
Go$8/monthLightweight coding tasks
Plus$20/monthA few focused coding sessions each week
ProFrom $100/month5x or 20x higher limits than Plus
Business$20/user/month billed annually, $25 monthlySame limits as Plus per seat, 2+ users
Enterprise/EduContact salesCredit-based

One caveat: OpenAI's help center says that as of September 10, 2026, new sign-ups and upgrades to the $200 Pro (20x) tier are temporarily paused. The $100 Pro tier is not affected. You can also run the Codex CLI with an API key and pay per token.

Cursor

  • Hobby: free, with limited Agent requests
  • Individual: $20/month. The page offers Pro, Pro+ and Ultra levels inside this plan. We couldn't confirm the higher levels' prices, so check the page. It includes MCPs, skills, hooks and cloud agents.
  • Teams: $40/user/month
  • Enterprise: custom

Paid plans include a set amount of model usage, with on-demand billing beyond it.

GitHub Copilot

PlanPrice (September 2026)Monthly GitHub AI credits
Free$0Limited allowance
Pro$10/month1,500
Pro+$39/month7,000
Max$100/month20,000
Business$19/seat/month1,900 per user
Enterprise$39/seat/month3,900 per user

Copilot Pro includes unlimited code completions. The credits cover agent and chat usage across models.

App builders: Lovable, Bolt, Replit, v0

These browser-based builders suit non-developers, since they include hosting and a visual preview. They meter usage in credits or tokens, and complex prompts use more.

ToolEntry paid plan (September 2026)What's included
LovablePro from $25/month ($21/month billed annually)From 100 credits/month plus daily build credits; Business from $50/month
BoltPro $25/monthFrom 10M tokens/month, unused tokens roll over; Teams $30/member/month; Free has 1M tokens/month
ReplitCore $20/month ($18 billed annually)$20 of usage for the most capable models; Pro is $100/month ($90 annually)
v0Plus from $30/user/month$30 of monthly credits per user plus $2 of daily login credits; Free includes $5/month; Business $100/user/month

API pricing: when you pay per token

If you run Claude Code with a Console API key, or run agents in CI, you pay Anthropic's API rates. At the time of writing:

ModelInput per MTokOutput per MTokCache read per MTok
Opus 5$5$25$0.50
Sonnet 5$2$10$0.20
Haiku 4.5$1$5$0.10

Batch processing saves 50%, and fast mode for Opus 5 costs 2x standard pricing.

Rough arithmetic, not a measurement: say one coding session on Sonnet 5 sends 2M input tokens, 80% of them served from cache, and gets 100K output tokens back. That's 1.6M × $0.20 + 0.4M × $2 + 0.1M × $10, about $2.10 before cache-write charges. Twenty such sessions a month is roughly $40. Heavy agentic days with long contexts can use several times that, which is why daily users usually choose a subscription.

OpenAI's API is also usage-based. We didn't verify current per-token rates for its coding models, so check OpenAI's pricing page before comparing.

The free ecosystem: skills, subagents and MCP servers

This is the part many cost guides skip. Almost everything that makes an agent better at your work costs nothing:

  • Skills are folders of Markdown and scripts. Anthropic's public skills repo, Superpowers, and most community collections on GitHub are free and open source.
  • Subagents are Markdown files. Collections such as wshobson/agents and VoltAgent's subagents are free to copy.
  • Plugins and marketplaces for Claude Code, including Anthropic's official marketplace, don't charge to install.
  • Many MCP servers are free to run. Playwright MCP runs locally at no cost. The GitHub MCP server needs only a GitHub account and a personal access token.

The hidden cost is context, not dollars. Every installed skill description and every MCP tool definition takes some of the model's context, and on API billing that means tokens. Keep what you use and remove the rest.

Where MCP servers do cost money

Some MCP servers are free wrappers around a paid service. The server is free, but the API behind it isn't:

  • Context7 (library docs): free plan with 1,000 API calls/month; Pro $10/seat/month with 5,000 calls per seat.
  • Firecrawl (web scraping): free plan with 1,000 credits/month; Hobby $19/month ($16 billed annually) for 5,000 credits; Standard about $99/month ($83 billed annually) for 100,000 credits.
  • Supabase, Sentry and similar: the MCP server is free, but you're bound by the plan of the underlying product. Free tiers often cover a side project, and production use needs a paid plan.

Three monthly budgets

These are example setups using the prices above, not recommendations to buy any one tool.

1. Solo hobbyist: $0–$20/month

You build a few evenings a week: a personal site, a small tool, a game.

ItemMonthly
One subscription: Claude Pro ($20, or $17 annually), ChatGPT Plus ($20), or Copilot Pro ($10)$10–$20
Skills, subagents, Playwright and GitHub MCP$0
Context7 free plan$0
Total$10–$20

If you'd rather not touch a terminal, one app builder plan (Lovable Pro from $25, Bolt Pro $25, Replit Core $20) replaces the subscription line. At $0 you can still try things on the free tiers (Copilot Free, Cursor Hobby, Bolt Free, Lovable Free, ChatGPT Free), but expect to hit limits within a session or two.

2. Indie hacker: about $100–$170/month

You ship products, code most days, and hit Pro-level limits by early afternoon.

ItemMonthly
Claude Max, starting tier$100
Or: ChatGPT Pro, $100 tier($100)
Cursor Individual as an editor alongside the terminal agent (optional)$20
Firecrawl Hobby for scraping or research features (optional)$19
Context7 Pro if you exceed the free calls (optional)$10
Occasional usage credits on busy weeksVaries
Total$100–$149, plus any extra usage

A common alternative is two $20 subscriptions (say Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus), switching when one hits its limit. That's $40/month for more total capacity than either one alone, at the cost of keeping two setups in sync. Skills and AGENTS.md make that easier, since both apps read them.

3. Small team (5 people): about $100–$650/month

Here, central billing, admin controls and shared configuration matter as much as raw usage.

SetupCalculationMonthly
Copilot Business5 × $19$95
Claude Team, standard seats, annual5 × $20$100
Claude Team, standard seats, monthly5 × $25$125
ChatGPT Business, monthly5 × $25$125
Cursor Teams5 × $40$200
Claude Team, 2 premium + 3 standard seats, monthly2 × $125 + 3 × $25$325
Cursor Teams plus Claude Team standard, monthly$200 + $125$325
Claude Team, all premium seats, monthly5 × $125$625

Most teams mix: premium seats for the two or three heaviest users, standard seats for everyone else. Add any paid MCP-backed services (Context7 seats, Firecrawl, your error tracker) and API spend for CI agents.

The ecosystem stays free at team scale. A shared .claude/ folder, a committed .mcp.json and a private plugin marketplace in a Git repo cost nothing beyond your existing GitHub plan.

How to keep the bill down

  • Start with one $20 plan. Upgrade only after you hit limits several days in a row.
  • Use cheaper models for grunt work. Point test-running and log-reading subagents at a smaller model such as Haiku.
  • Trim context. A shorter CLAUDE.md, fewer MCP servers and skills you actually use all mean fewer tokens per turn.
  • Clear between tasks. Starting a fresh session for unrelated work stops you paying to resend old context.
  • Watch extra usage settings. Credits that switch on automatically are convenient and easy to forget.
  • Check /deals. Vendors run student and startup discounts; Lovable, for example, advertises 50% off Pro for students.

Where to compare

Prices move fast in this market. Our pricing page tracks plan changes, and each app's listing under /apps shows its current tiers. The ecosystem map shows which free skills, subagents and MCP servers work with the app you're paying for, so you don't pay for features you can add for free.
