What is Cursor?

What it is

Cursor is an AI code editor built on VS Code, so your extensions, keybindings and settings carry over. Around the editor it adds a coding agent that plans and makes multi-file changes from chat, fast Tab completion that predicts your next edit, and cloud agents that work on tasks in the background. It integrates with GitHub, GitLab, Azure DevOps, Bitbucket, Slack, Linear and JetBrains IDEs, and gives access to a wide range of models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others, plus Cursor's own Composer models.

Key features

  • Agent for multi-file changes, codebase questions, bug hunting and plans
  • Tab completion that suggests multi-line edits as you type
  • Cloud agents that run tasks remotely in parallel
  • Bugbot for automated pull request review (usage-billed on paid plans)
  • 50+ models with context windows of up to 1M tokens on some models
  • Familiar VS Code interface with the existing extension ecosystem

Skills, subagents and MCP

Cursor stores its configuration in the .cursor/ directory. Project rules are .mdc files with frontmatter in .cursor/rules, and Cursor also reads AGENTS.md in the project root and in subdirectories as a simpler alternative. MCP servers, Agent Skills, hooks and plugins are all supported, and Cursor added native subagents: independent agents that handle discrete parts of a task in parallel, each with its own context, prompt, tool access and model. Built-in subagents cover codebase research, terminal commands and parallel workflows, and you can define custom ones. The pricing page lists MCPs, skills and hooks on every paid plan.

Pricing

At the time of writing (September 2026), Hobby is free with limited agent requests. Pro costs $20 per month, Pro+ $60 per month with three times Pro's agent limits, and Ultra $200 per month with twenty times Pro's limits and priority access to new features. Paying yearly saves 20%. Team and Enterprise plans are available; check the pricing page for current terms.

Who it is for

Developers who want AI deeply integrated into a familiar editor rather than a separate terminal agent, and teams already standardised on VS Code.

Verdict

Cursor remains one of the most complete AI editors, pairing strong autocomplete with a capable agent and full support for rules, AGENTS.md, MCP, skills, subagents and hooks. Heavy agent users should watch their limits, since usage above a plan's allowance, and features such as Bugbot, are billed on top.
