About AWS MCP Servers
What it does
The awslabs/mcp repository is AWS's open-source collection of MCP servers, and there are dozens of them. Each server covers one AWS area, so you add only what your project needs. Examples include documentation lookup, infrastructure as code, serverless, containers, databases, messaging, monitoring and cost analysis. For vibe coders, the most useful are usually the documentation servers, so the agent writes code against current AWS APIs, and the IaC or Serverless servers for deployment. The repository is Apache-2.0 licensed. AWS also runs managed remote options alongside it: the AWS Knowledge MCP Server and the AWS MCP Server, which was still in preview at the time of writing.
Tools it gives your agent
A sample of the servers in the collection:
- Docs: AWS Documentation server (local) and the AWS Knowledge server (remote)
- Infrastructure: IaC, Cloud Control API, EKS, ECS, Serverless and Lambda tool servers
- API access: the AWS API server, which runs AWS CLI commands on your behalf
- Data: DynamoDB, Aurora (PostgreSQL, MySQL, DSQL), DocumentDB, Neptune, Redshift, ElastiCache and S3 Tables
- Operations and cost: CloudWatch, Pricing, Billing and Cost Management, and Support
- AI: Bedrock Knowledge Bases, AgentCore and SageMaker AI
Works with
The servers in the repo run locally over stdio through uvx. The README covers Kiro, Cursor, VS Code, Windsurf, Cline, Claude Code and other clients, and any MCP client that can start a local command, including Codex and Gemini CLI, can run them. AWS Knowledge is a remote server at https://knowledge-mcp.global.api.aws.
How to connect
Install uv, set up AWS credentials, then add the servers you want. For example, in Claude Code:
claude mcp add aws-docs uvx awslabs.aws-documentation-mcp-server@latest
claude mcp add aws-iac uvx awslabs.aws-iac-mcp-server@latest
claude mcp add aws-pricing uvx awslabs.aws-pricing-mcp-server@latest
Cost and limits
The servers are free. You pay only for whatever AWS usage your agent's actions create. The Knowledge server needs no AWS account or authentication, but it is rate-limited.
Safety notes
Local servers use your AWS credentials and profile, so the agent can do anything your IAM role allows. Give it a narrowly scoped role. For the AWS API server, set READ_OPERATIONS_ONLY=true to block writes. You can also set REQUIRE_MUTATION_CONSENT=true to be asked before every change, but that only works in clients that support MCP elicitation.
