About Trigger.dev
What it does
Trigger.dev is an open-source platform for durable background jobs, AI agents and workflows written in TypeScript, available as a managed cloud or self-hosted. Its official MCP server connects a coding agent to your Trigger.dev projects, so the agent can search the documentation, set up the SDK in a codebase, trigger and debug task runs, and deploy, all from the editor or terminal.
Tools it gives your agent
The server exposes a documentation search tool; project tools to list organisations and projects, create a project and initialise Trigger.dev in the current repository; task tools to inspect the current worker and its payload schemas and to trigger a task with options such as delay, tags, machine size or idempotency key; run tools to fetch run details with logs and traces, list runs with filters, wait for completion and cancel; deployment tools to deploy and list deployments and preview branches; profile tools to switch CLI profiles; query tools for a SQL-style language over runs, metrics and LLM usage plus built-in dashboards and health reports; and tools to start, stop and check the local dev server. Chat tools let you talk to agents you built on the platform.
Works with
The documentation provides configuration for Claude Code, Cursor, Windsurf, VS Code, Zed, Cline, Gemini CLI, Amp, Codex CLI and OpenCode, and any MCP client that runs a local stdio server can use it.
How to install
The interactive installer detects your clients and configures them:
npx trigger.dev@latest install-mcp
Maintenance and safety
The platform is Apache-2.0 licensed and maintained by the Trigger.dev company with frequent releases. The MCP server can deploy code and trigger or cancel production runs, so use the documented --dev-only flag to hide deployment tools or --readonly to hide deploy, trigger and cancel when you only want inspection. A Trigger.dev account or self-hosted instance is required; the cloud has free and paid tiers.
Who should use it
Developers building background jobs or AI agents on Trigger.dev who want their coding agent to scaffold tasks, run them and diagnose failed runs without switching to the dashboard.
Pros
- Covers docs search, project setup, runs, deployments and analytics queries
- Installer configures many clients automatically
- --readonly and --dev-only flags limit risky tools
Cons
- Requires a Trigger.dev cloud account or self-hosted instance
- Deploy and trigger tools can affect production if not restricted
