What it does

Notion MCP connects AI agents to your Notion workspace, letting them search, read, create and update pages and databases. A coding agent can use it to pull a spec or PRD straight into its context, write release notes or a technical doc back into Notion, or update a task database when work ships. It comes in two versions. Notion now focuses on the hosted server at mcp.notion.com, which you connect to with OAuth. Its tools are designed for agents: pages are read and edited as Markdown to save tokens. The older open-source local server in makenotion/notion-mcp-server still works through a Notion integration token. However, the README says it may be retired and its issues are no longer actively monitored.

Works with

Notion's docs have setup steps for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Devin and several other agents, and any client that supports remote MCP servers can connect. The endpoints are https://mcp.notion.com/mcp (Streamable HTTP) and /sse. The local npm server @notionhq/notion-mcp-server suits clients that need stdio.

How to connect

claude mcp add --transport http notion https://mcp.notion.com/mcp

Then run /mcp in Claude Code and complete the OAuth flow.

Cost and limits

Notion MCP works on every Notion plan. Some features depend on your plan: advanced search filters and date sorting need Business or Enterprise, and AI search needs Notion AI. At the time of writing (September 2026), check Notion's pricing page for current plan prices.

Safety notes

A connected client can see everything you can see in the workspace. Notion's own guidance is to treat page content as untrusted, because it can carry prompt injection. Turn on confirmation before any write. Workspace owners can review and revoke MCP connections under Settings, then Connections. With the local server, you can create a read-only integration and share only the pages the agent needs.
