What is Cmux?
What it does
cmux is a native macOS terminal, built on libghostty, designed around running several AI coding agent sessions side by side rather than as an afterthought bolted onto a generic terminal. Vertical and horizontal tabs, per-pane notifications, and a sidebar showing git/PR/port state are all built for juggling many concurrent agents.
What is inside
- Blue notification rings and highlighted tabs when an agent pane needs attention, plus a dedicated notification panel
- Sidebar with git branch, PR status, working directory, and listening ports per pane
- Vertical and horizontal split panes with directional navigation
- A scriptable in-app browser pane with DOM snapshots and JS evaluation
- SSH support that routes browser panes through the remote network so localhost just works
- Native "Claude Code Teams" teammate mode without tmux
- Session restore of layout, working directories, scrollback, and browser history on relaunch
- A CLI and Unix socket API for automation
Works with
Any terminal-based coding agent, with native resume integrations for Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Gemini CLI, Kiro, Aider, Goose, Amp, Cline, Cursor Agent, Grok, Pi, Rovo Dev, Copilot, CodeBuddy, Factory, and Qoder.
How to install or connect
brew tap manaflow-ai/cmux
brew install --cask cmux
brew upgrade --cask cmux
A signed DMG with auto-updates via Sparkle is also available from the GitHub releases page, along with nightly builds.
Pricing
The core terminal is free and open source (GPL-3.0-or-later); the project's own site states "cmux is free to use." A separate paid tier, cmux Founder's Edition, unlocks early access to the iOS companion app, "cmux AI," and hosted Cloud VMs, but cmux does not publish a price on its site for that tier - you have to follow the Founder's Edition link from the homepage to see current terms.
Maintenance and safety
Open source under GPL-3.0-or-later (commercial licensing available separately) with over 27,000 stars, 2,400 forks, and 16,000+ commits - a very active project, though the open issue/PR count is high for its size. Because it launches and manages multiple agent CLIs with shell, git, and browser access, treat it like any terminal that runs agents with real permissions on your machine.
Who should use it
macOS developers running multiple CLI coding agents in parallel who want notification, git, and PR context built into the terminal itself instead of stitched together with tmux and shell scripts.

Pros
- Purpose-built notification and status system (rings, tab highlights, a dedicated panel) so you can tell at a glance which of many agent panes needs attention
- Sidebar surfaces git branch, PR status, working directory, and listening ports per pane; session layout, scrollback, and browser history survive a relaunch
- Free and open source (GPL-3.0-or-later) with native resume integrations for a long list of CLI agents beyond Claude Code
Cons
- macOS only, and still early with heavy churn (2k open issues, 1.7k open PRs) relative to its 27k stars
- Founder's Edition (paid) gates the iOS app, cloud VMs and early AI features behind a tier with no public pricing listed
