What is Kun?
What it does
Kun is a local-first AI agent workspace built to move from "AI answering questions" to "AI completing work." It runs as a single shared runtime behind either a desktop GUI or a terminal TUI, so tasks, approvals, plans and evidence carry over no matter which interface you open.
What is inside
- Code mode: project-aware file editing, terminal access, Git/Worktree integration, diff review and testing
- Design mode: a canvas reachable from inside Code tasks, for prototyping and design systems
- Work mode: Markdown editing plus PDF/Office document analysis, spreadsheet work and presentation creation
- Rooms: multi-agent collaboration with private or group chat, configurable teams, and isolated Git worktrees per agent so parallel work doesn't collide
- Persistent plans, approvals and task evidence that survive across sessions, plus scheduling, loops, hooks and an extension platform
Pricing
Kun is free to download and run under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0. Non-commercial, educational and research use is unrestricted; commercial use, SaaS deployment or bundling it into a commercial product requires separate written authorization from the author, so companies should check that before adopting it for paid work.
Works with
Model providers are configurable rather than fixed: ChatGPT/Codex, Claude, Gemini, Cursor's models, Ollama, DeepSeek, Kimi, GLM, Qwen, MiniMax and Xiaomi MiMo, connected via subscriptions, API keys or self-hosted endpoints. It also speaks the Model Context Protocol, so it can reach any MCP server you configure.
How to install or connect
Pre-built packages (.dmg/.zip for macOS, .exe for Windows, .AppImage/.deb for Linux) are published on GitHub Releases. To build from source (Node.js 22.19+ required):
git clone https://github.com/KunAgent/Kun.git
cd Kun
npm ci
npm run dev
Maintenance and safety
Actively developed, with 6.3k+ GitHub stars and 2,600+ commits. Session data, preferences and logs default to local storage; prompts sent to a cloud model provider leave your machine, so review that provider's data policy. The README states tool permissions and sensitive or extension operations are surfaced explicitly in the interface and require user authorization before they run.
Who should use it
Individuals who want one local runtime spanning coding, lightweight design and document/office work, and who are comfortable with a noncommercial license for personal, educational or evaluation use — or are willing to seek a commercial license before using it inside a company.

Pros
- Single runtime spans desktop GUI and terminal TUI with shared state
- Broad scope beyond coding: design canvas and document/office modes too
- Multi-model support (Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Ollama, DeepSeek) avoids vendor lock-in
Cons
- PolyForm Noncommercial license blocks commercial use without a separate agreement
- Breadth across code/design/work modes may mean less depth than a coding-only specialist tool
