What is MiMo Code?
What it does
MiMo Code is a terminal-native AI coding agent from Xiaomi's MiMo team. It reads and edits code, runs shell commands, manages Git, and keeps a persistent, SQLite-backed memory of your project so it can pick up context across sessions instead of starting cold every time. It ships three agent modes: Build (full read/write/execute permissions), Plan (read-only planning), and Compose (multi-step orchestration across subagents).
What is inside
- A subagent system for parallel task execution with lifecycle tracking, plus a tree-shaped task tracker that preserves progress across sessions
- Automatic context checkpoints and reconstruction so long sessions don't blow the context window
- 20+ built-in skills, including arXiv paper analysis, PDF/Word/PowerPoint/Excel manipulation, and research-paper writing
- Voice input via TenVAD + MiMo ASR (for MiMo-logged-in users), and a desktop build with browser and computer control
- MCP server connections, configurable through JSON/JSONC files (global or per-project)
Works with
MiMo Code is provider-agnostic: it connects to Xiaomi's own MiMo models, OpenAI (via OAuth), Anthropic Claude, xAI Grok, or any custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint. It doesn't advertise deep integrations with other coding apps — it's a standalone terminal agent you point at whichever model backend you prefer.
How to install or connect
curl -fsSL https://mimo.xiaomi.com/install | bash
Windows users can run the PowerShell equivalent (irm https://mimo.xiaomi.com/install.ps1 | iex), or install cross-platform via npm install -g @mimo-ai/cli. On macOS it needs iTerm2 or the VS Code terminal; WSL users should install xsel for clipboard support.
Maintenance and safety
The CLI is MIT-licensed and open source, with an additional "use restrictions" document and separate terms for Xiaomi-hosted models and trademarks. It supports a flag that auto-approves all agent actions — the docs warn to use it only in trusted, disposable environments, since it also removes guardrails around temp-directory access.
Who should use it
Developers comfortable working entirely in a terminal who want long-lived project memory and multi-agent orchestration without being locked into one model vendor.
Pricing: the CLI itself is free and open source (MIT); Xiaomi's own hosted MiMo models are free for a limited time via a beta/trial, with a paid Token Plan (roughly CNY 39-659/month) for heavier usage, while other providers (OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, custom) are bring-your-own-API-key.

Pros
- Persistent, SQLite-backed project memory and automatic checkpoints keep long sessions coherent across restarts
- Provider-agnostic — works with Xiaomi's own MiMo models, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, xAI Grok, or any custom OpenAI-compatible endpoint
- Ships 20+ built-in skills (PDF/Word/PowerPoint/Excel handling, arXiv analysis, research writing) well beyond plain code editing
Cons
- macOS support is limited to iTerm2 or the VS Code terminal — Terminal.app isn't supported
- An unrestricted permission flag exists that auto-approves every agent action if misused; the docs explicitly warn against it outside disposable environments
