About Anthropic Agent Skills

What it does

This is Anthropic's own public repository of Agent Skills. It serves two purposes: it ships working skills you can install today, and it is the reference for how a skill is put together. Each skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file (YAML front matter with a name and a description, then instructions), optionally joined by scripts and reference files that the agent loads only when needed. The repository also holds the Agent Skills specification and a starter template.

What is inside

At the time of writing (September 2026) the skills/ folder contains around twenty skills. They fall into a few groups:

  • Document skills: docx, pdf, pptx and xlsx, the same skills that power Claude's file creation features.
  • Development: frontend-design, webapp-testing, mcp-builder, web-artifacts-builder and claude-api.
  • Creative and communication: algorithmic-art, canvas-design, theme-factory, brand-guidelines, internal-comms, doc-coauthoring and slack-gif-creator.
  • Meta: skill-creator, for building and testing new skills.

In Claude Code they are grouped into plugins, mainly document-skills and example-skills, plus a few single-skill plugins.

Works with

The repository ships a Claude Code plugin marketplace. The skills also work in Claude.ai (paid plans already include them) and the Claude API. Because they follow the open SKILL.md format, you can copy them into any agent that supports Agent Skills, but check each skill's licence first.

How to install

/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install document-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills

Maintenance and safety

The repository is actively maintained. The licence differs between skills: most are Apache 2.0, while the four document skills are source-available under a proprietary licence that ties their use to Anthropic's terms. Anthropic describes the skills as demonstration material, and some of them run Python or Node scripts on your machine, so test them before relying on them.

Who should use it

Anyone starting with Agent Skills. Install the document skills if you work with office files, and read a few SKILL.md files before you write your own.
