About Frontend Design skill
What it does
Frontend Design is one of the skills in Anthropic's official skills repository. It changes how the agent makes visual decisions when it builds or restyles a user interface. Without it, AI-built pages tend to look alike: the same card grids, soft shadows, gradient accents and stock typography. The skill tells the agent to work out the subject, audience and main job of the page before it designs anything. It then asks for a deliberate aesthetic direction that fits that brief, instead of whatever layout comes first.
What is inside
The skill is a single SKILL.md file plus a licence file. There are no scripts. The instructions cover several areas:
- Grounding visual choices in the subject matter
- Choosing one or two typefaces on purpose and setting a clear type scale
- Using borders, numbering and labels only where they carry meaning
- Keeping motion sparing
- Writing copy that does not read as a template
It also lists the visual habits common in generated designs so the agent can avoid them. Finally, it sets out a short process: plan, check the plan against the brief, build, then critique the result.
Works with
It ships in the example-skills plugin of the Anthropic marketplace for Claude Code. Claude.ai paid plans already include the example skills. As a plain SKILL.md it can also be copied into any agent that supports Agent Skills.
How to install
/plugin marketplace add anthropics/skills
/plugin install example-skills@anthropic-agent-skills
Maintenance and safety
It is maintained in the main Anthropic skills repository and is licensed Apache 2.0. The skill contains only text, so it runs nothing on your machine. The instructions are fairly long, but like any skill they load only when the agent decides the skill applies. They then shape design decisions for the rest of that task.
Who should use it
Vibe coders and developers who build landing pages, dashboards or app interfaces and want results that look designed rather than generated. Taste is still subjective, so expect to give feedback on the direction the agent picks.
Pros
- Noticeably better-looking UIs
- Loaded only when you build UI, so it costs little context otherwise
Cons
- Taste is subjective; you may still steer it
