About Awesome Codex CLI
What it does
Awesome Codex CLI is a reading list for OpenAI's terminal coding agent. It gathers official documentation, community subagents, skills, plugins, hooks, MCP servers and companion tools into one organised page. Each entry has a short note on what it is and, often, why it is worth a look. It is a discovery resource, not something you install. It helps because the Codex ecosystem is spread across many small repositories.
What is inside
- Official resources: links to the Codex docs for config, skills, subagents, plugins, MCP, hooks, sandboxing, exec policy and non-interactive mode, plus OpenAI's skills catalog and the Codex GitHub Action
- AGENTS.md templates and guides for project instructions
- Subagents, skills, plugins and hooks from community collections
- MCP servers with documented Codex setup
- IDE integrations, GUI and desktop apps, session and workflow managers
- Model providers and proxies, CI/CD, cross-agent tools, monitoring and Docker sandboxing
- Tutorials, videos, comparisons with Claude Code and Gemini CLI, a list of people to follow, shell plugins and remote-access bridges
Most GitHub entries show a live star badge, so you can judge how popular a project is. You still need to check each project's activity yourself.
Works with
The list is about Codex CLI. Many linked projects also support Claude Code, Gemini CLI and other agents, so check each one's README.
How to install
Nothing to install. Open the repository README on GitHub and browse by section. Contributions go through the project's contribution guidelines.
Maintenance and safety
The list is released under CC0 and was updated recently. It is an open list that accepts pull requests, so how carefully entries are checked depends on the maintainer, and some links point to small or early-stage projects. Treat every linked installer, especially curl-to-shell scripts and account or auth tools, as untrusted until you have read it.
Who should use it
It suits Codex CLI users looking for subagents, skills, MCP servers or tooling around the agent, and Claude Code users checking what the Codex ecosystem offers. It is less useful if you want a short, opinionated shortlist, because the list covers breadth rather than ranking.
Pros
- Groups a fragmented ecosystem by feature category with short notes
- Covers official docs, subagents, skills, plugins, MCP servers and tooling
- Live star badges help gauge popularity
Cons
- A discovery list, nothing to install; you must vet each linked project yourself
- Open PR-based list, so curation depth depends on the maintainer
