About Power BI Agentic Development
What it does
Power BI Agentic Development is a plugin marketplace that teaches coding agents how to work with Power BI and Microsoft Fabric. It packages domain knowledge, subagents and validation hooks so an agent can help build and maintain semantic models, reports, paginated reports, custom visuals and ETL, along with the workspaces and deployment pipelines around them. Instead of one big install, it exposes a set of focused plugins you add only when a project needs them, because each active skill competes for the agent's context.
What is inside
- Plugins covering semantic models, reports, paginated reports, custom visuals, PBIP/PBIR project files, Tabular Editor, Power BI Desktop, Fabric CLI, Fabric admin and ETL, plus a "goblin-mode" starter
- Skills that carry Power BI and Fabric workflow knowledge and can be invoked by name
- Review subagents that validate work
- Deterministic hooks that run after edits to check PBIR, TMDL and report bindings, DAX references, measure metadata and referential integrity; individual checks can be toggled off in per-plugin config files
Works with
Claude Code and GitHub Copilot CLI, which both read the same marketplace manifest. Agents load the skills identically; agent files ship with a dual extension so both hosts pick them up. The plugins in this repo do not currently ship MCP servers.
How to install
claude plugin marketplace add data-goblin/power-bi-agentic-development
Then install only the plugins you need, for example:
claude plugin install tabular-editor@power-bi-agentic-development
claude plugin install semantic-models@power-bi-agentic-development
Maintenance and safety
GPL-3.0 licensed and under active weekly development. The README warns that versions 26.26 through 26.38 are a deliberate breaking transition, with skills renamed or removed between releases; pin 26.25 or earlier if you need the older structure. Prefer installing plugins per project rather than user-wide so each project carries only what it uses. The documented Windows long-path workaround edits the registry and needs care.
Who should use it
Data professionals building Power BI and Fabric artifacts who use Claude Code or Copilot and want their agent to follow Power BI conventions and catch model and report errors early. It is narrow by design and of little use outside the Microsoft BI stack.
Pros
- Focused plugins for semantic models, reports, PBIP, Tabular Editor and Fabric
- Deterministic hooks validate TMDL, PBIR, DAX and referential integrity
- Works in both Claude Code and Copilot CLI from one manifest
Cons
- In a deliberate breaking-transition version range; pin an older release if you need stability
- Only useful within the Microsoft BI stack
