About Universal Modder
What it does
Universal Modder is a collection of Agent Skills, a CLI, and an MCP server that let an AI coding agent mod almost any PC game you own — reconnaissance on the game engine, reverse engineering of its file formats, AI-generated replacement assets, testing the mod in-game, and producing a showcase video of the result.
What is inside
The core skill, mod-any-game, runs a structured 10-step workflow backed by 12 engine-specific playbooks. Supporting skills handle game-recon (identifying the engine and planning the mod), reverse-engineering (decompilation and file-format analysis), fal-assets (AI-generated sprites, 3D models, and audio through the fal MCP server), asset-pipeline (converting art into engine-specific formats), game-automation (launching the game and driving safe automated testing), and showcase-video (recording and editing gameplay footage). A Python CLI (um) wraps scanning, asset generation, video editing, save backups, and knowledge-base management, and a shared knowledge base persists what the agent learns about a given game across sessions.
Works with
Any agent that reads Agent Skills or an AGENTS.md file, including Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Gemini CLI, and OpenCode.
How to install or connect
# via a plugin marketplace (Claude Code, Codex, VS Code), or:
git clone https://github.com/rehan-remade/universal-modder
# CLI install:
uv tool install universal-modder
# or
pipx install universal-modder
Maintenance and safety
MIT licensed, actively pushed (last commit September 2026), with over 1,500 GitHub stars and 108 forks. Because it decompiles and repacks game files, users should keep mods for personal use and check the target game's terms before redistributing reverse-engineered content.
Who should use it
Modders and hobbyist developers who want an AI agent to handle the grunt work of reverse engineering and asset creation for a PC game mod, rather than doing engine recon and format analysis by hand.
Pros
- Covers the full modding loop end to end: engine recon, reverse engineering, AI-generated art/3D/audio via fal, asset conversion, in-game testing, and showcase v
- Works with any agent that reads Agent Skills or AGENTS.md, not locked to one vendor, and installs through existing plugin marketplaces
Cons
- Niche use case outside typical app/web development; reverse-engineering game files can run into a game's EULA or anti-cheat terms depending on the title, which
