About Talk to Figma MCP

What it does

Talk to Figma MCP, published by Grab, lets a coding agent read and edit a live Figma file. The MCP server does not call Figma's REST API. It passes commands through a small local WebSocket relay to a Figma plugin that runs inside your open document. So the agent works on the canvas you are looking at: it can inspect the current selection, read node trees and styles, create frames and text, change auto layout, and apply component instance overrides. Common uses are pulling exact spacing and styles into code, replacing text across a design in bulk, turning old sticky-note annotations into native Figma annotations, and drawing prototype flows as FigJam connectors. It is not an official Figma product.

Tools it gives your agent

  • Reading: get_document_info, get_selection, read_my_design, get_node_info, scan_text_nodes, get_styles, get_local_components, get_reactions
  • Creating: rectangles, frames, sections, text and component instances
  • Editing: text content (also in bulk), fills, strokes, corner radius, image fills, auto layout padding and spacing, move, resize, clone, rename and delete
  • Annotations and flows: create native annotations and draw FigJam connector lines
  • Export and session: export_node_as_image and join_channel, plus helper prompts for design strategies

Works with

This is a local stdio server run with Bun. The README names Cursor and Claude Code, and the repo also mentions Codex. Any MCP client that can start a local command should work. You also need the Figma desktop or web app with the plugin running and joined to the same channel.

How to connect

Install the plugin from the Figma Community page. Then start the relay and add the server to your MCP config:

bun socket
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "TalkToFigma": {
      "command": "bunx",
      "args": ["cursor-talk-to-figma-mcp@latest"]
    }
  }
}

Cost and limits

It is free and MIT-licensed. It needs Bun and a Figma account that can edit the file. Image export comes back as base64 text and is only partly supported.

Safety notes

The agent can delete and overwrite nodes in any file where the plugin is running, so work on a copy or on a branch of the file. The WebSocket relay runs without authentication. Keep it on localhost unless you need the WSL workaround.

Pros

  • Can write to the canvas, not just read designs
  • Bulk text replacement and instance override propagation
  • Works on the file you have open, no REST token needed

Cons

  • Three moving parts: MCP server, WebSocket relay and Figma plugin
  • Unofficial; relay has no authentication
