About SpecStory
What it does
SpecStory saves the conversations you have with AI coding assistants as Markdown files inside your project, in a .specstory/history/ folder. That gives you a searchable local record of prompts, answers and decisions that would otherwise disappear when a session ends. The getspecstory repository is the public home for the project: it hosts the open-source SpecStory CLI, the Lore agent skill, documentation links and the issue tracker.
What is inside
- SpecStory CLI: a wrapper that launches a terminal agent (
specstory run claude, specstory run codexand so on) and records each session.specstory syncrenders earlier sessions in the project as Markdown. - IDE extensions for Cursor and VS Code with GitHub Copilot. These are closed source and installed from the editor's extension panel.
- Lore: an Agent Skill that mines your saved history for workflows you repeat, shows the evidence, and turns the ones you approve into
SKILL.mdskills installed across your agents. - SpecStory Cloud (optional, login required): sync, search, chat over past sessions, sharing and an API.
Works with
The CLI supports Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor CLI, Gemini CLI, Factory Droid, Antigravity CLI, Qwen Code, DeepSeek TUI, Pi and Muse Code. Lore follows the Agent Skills format, so any skills-compatible agent can run it; the README mentions Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI.
How to install
The CLI installs through Homebrew, and Lore through the skills installer (Node 22.5 or newer):
brew tap specstoryai/tap
brew install specstory
npx skills add specstoryai/getspecstory --skill lore
Maintenance and safety
The repository is Apache-2.0 licensed and is updated frequently. The editor extensions are not open source. Everything is stored locally by default, and nothing goes to SpecStory Cloud until you sign up and log in. Keep in mind that saved histories can contain secrets or internal code that were pasted into chats, so decide deliberately whether to commit .specstory/ or sync it. Lore runs Node scripts over your transcripts and writes new skill files, so read its plan before approving it.
Who should use it
Developers and teams who want a durable, searchable record of their agent sessions across several tools, and who would like to turn their habits into reusable skills.
Pros
- Local-first capture of sessions from many terminal agents and IDEs
- Lore turns real history into evidence-backed SKILL.md skills
- Open-source CLI with optional cloud search and team sharing
Cons
- Cursor and VS Code extensions are closed source; cloud features need an account
- Saved histories can contain secrets if committed or synced carelessly
