About Go Modern Guidelines
What it does
Go Modern Guidelines is an official JetBrains skill/rules package that teaches AI coding agents to write modern, idiomatic Go instead of outdated patterns. Rather than being a standalone application, it's reference material an agent loads and applies automatically when it detects a relevant Go task — for example, favoring the builtin max(a, b) over a manual conditional, and using features introduced anywhere from Go 1.0 through Go 1.27.
What is inside
A curated set of guideline documents covering modern Go idioms and language-version-specific features, packaged so multiple agent platforms can install and load them as a skill/extension rather than copy-pasting rules into a prompt by hand.
Works with
Documented installers exist for several platforms: JetBrains' own Junie, Claude Code (as a plugin), Cursor, and any agent supporting the generic skills convention via npx.

Requires Go 1.25+ on your PATH; it installs locally and does not modify your project files.
Maintenance and safety
Officially published by JetBrains (verified/official badge on GitHub) under the Apache-2.0 license, with 3.6k stars and active recent commits. Since it's a read-only guidance package rather than a code-executing tool, its safety profile is low-risk: it only shapes what the agent suggests or writes, and does not itself run commands or touch your project outside of what your chosen agent already does.
Who should use it
Go developers using an AI coding agent (JetBrains Junie, Claude Code, Cursor, or another skills-compatible agent) who want that agent to consistently reach for current Go idioms and standard-library features instead of defaulting to older, more verbose patterns. It's a good fit for teams standardizing code style across a codebase maintained by multiple humans and agents, and for anyone who wants version-aware suggestions rather than generic advice that ignores which Go release a project actually targets.
Pros
- Officially published and maintained by JetBrains, a credible, established source
- Low-risk: guidance-only, doesn't execute code or modify projects itself
- Documented installers for multiple agent platforms (Junie, Claude Code, Cursor, generic skills)
Cons
- Narrow scope: only useful on Go codebases
- Requires Go 1.25+ on PATH, so it won't help teams on older Go toolchains
