What is Base44?
What it is
Base44 is an AI app builder that creates complete applications from plain-language descriptions with the backend already included. Database, user authentication, storage, email and hosting are built in, so you do not need to wire up separate services or accounts. It is owned by Wix, whose name appears in the site's footer. The platform targets internal tools, dashboards, customer portals, small e-commerce sites and productivity apps.
Key features
- Built-in backend: database, authentication, file storage and hosting with instant deployment
- One-click integrations with services such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Notion, HubSpot and Salesforce
- Visual editor and global design controls for colours and fonts
- In-app code editing and AI model selection on paid plans
- GitHub integration on the Builder plan and above
- Built-in analytics, an SEO dashboard and custom domain support
Skills, subagents and MCP
Base44 is a closed, hosted builder. Its public pages do not document Agent Skills, subagents or MCP support, so extensibility comes through its own integrations and API connections. If you need to take code into a local agent workflow, the GitHub integration on higher plans is the route.
Pricing
At the time of writing (September 2026), the Free plan includes 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month. Paid plans are Starter at $16 a month, Builder at $40, Pro at $80 and Elite at $160 when billed annually, with annual billing described as a 20% saving; monthly billing costs more. Higher tiers raise both message and integration credits. Check the pricing page because the monthly and annual figures are easy to confuse.
Who it is for
Non-technical founders, operations teams and small businesses that want working internal tools or simple customer-facing apps without touching infrastructure. Developers who want full control of the stack will likely prefer tools that export standard code from the start.
Verdict
Base44's biggest advantage is that nothing needs configuring: the backend is simply there. The trade-offs are less direct control over the code than developer-oriented builders like Lovable or Bolt, GitHub access only from the Builder plan, and a headline price that reflects annual billing.
Pros
- Backend built in, nothing to configure
- Good for internal tools and MVPs
- Free plan
Cons
- Less control over the code than Lovable or Bolt
- $16 is the annual-billing rate
