What is Augment Code?

What it is

Augment Code is a commercial AI coding platform built around its Context Engine, which indexes your repositories so the agent can find relevant code across a large codebase without you pointing it at specific files. It runs as extensions for VS Code and JetBrains IDEs, as the Auggie command-line agent, and as an automated code reviewer on GitHub pull requests. Its newer Cosmos product adds triggers and specialised agents for building development automations.

Key features

  • Context Engine that retrieves code from large, multi-repository projects
  • Agent and chat in VS Code and JetBrains IDEs
  • Auggie CLI for terminal and scripted use, installed with npm install -g @augmentcode/auggie
  • Automated pull-request review with configurable review guidelines
  • The Context Engine can also be exposed over MCP, so other agents such as Claude Code or Cursor can use Augment's retrieval
  • SOC 2 Type II compliance and a stated policy of not training on customer code

Skills, subagents and MCP

Augment documents unusually broad standards support. The IDE agent and Auggie can connect to MCP servers. Rules come from AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md files, which are discovered hierarchically from the file's directory up to the repository root, plus workspace and user rules folders. Auggie plugins can bundle Agent Skills (SKILL.md folders), subagents defined in an agents/ directory, custom slash commands, rules, hooks and MCP servers, and can be shared through marketplaces.

Pricing

At the time of writing (September 2026), the Standard plan is $20 a month and the Business plan $100 a month, each including that amount of usage across models, the Context Engine and compute, with pay-as-you-go top-ups. Enterprise pricing is custom. The pricing page does not show a permanent free tier; check the pricing page for trials and current terms.

Who it is for

Engineering teams working in large or older codebases where finding the right code is the hard part, and teams that want the same agent across IDEs, the terminal and code review. It is less compelling for solo developers on small projects, where cheaper tools find context just as easily.

Verdict

Augment's retrieval is its main selling point, and its support for AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, Agent Skills, subagents and MCP makes it easy to fit into an existing agent setup. Usage-based pricing means costs follow how much you use it, so heavy users should watch spend.
