What is JetBrains Junie?
What it is
Junie is JetBrains' AI coding agent. It runs as a plugin in JetBrains IDEs such as IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm and Android Studio, as a standalone command-line agent on macOS, Linux and Windows, and inside GitHub Actions and GitLab CI/CD, where it can work on issues and open pull or merge requests. In the IDE it can use JetBrains' own code insight, inspections and test runners while it works.
Key features
- Plan mode that writes requirements, design and delivery stages before changing code
- Human-in-the-loop approvals for key actions, and course correction while a task runs
- Remote control for running tasks asynchronously and checking progress from the web
- A code review agent and CI integrations for GitHub and GitLab
- Support for several model families, with bring-your-own-key options
- CLI install:
curl -fsSL https://junie.jetbrains.com/install.sh | bash
Skills, subagents and MCP
Junie has good support for the current agent standards. It reads AGENTS.md from the project root, combined with .junie/playbook.md and any .junie/rules/*.md files, and applies them to every task. It supports Agent Skills, which load only when a task needs them. The CLI supports custom subagents, defined as Markdown files in the project's .agents/ folder with their own prompt, tool restrictions and model. MCP servers are configured in .junie/mcp/mcp.json at project level or ~/.junie/mcp/mcp.json for the user, and the same file works in the IDE and the CLI.
Pricing
Junie uses JetBrains AI credits. At the time of writing (September 2026), the Junie site lists a free tier with a small number of credits and paid AI Pro and AI Ultimate plans with larger monthly credit allowances. BYOK usage is billed at provider rates. Check the JetBrains AI pricing page for current plan prices and quotas.
Who it is for
Developers who already work in JetBrains IDEs and want an agent that understands the IDE's project model, and teams that want the same agent in the terminal and in CI. VS Code users are not the target.
Verdict
Junie has matured into a full agent with CLI and CI modes and first-class AGENTS.md, skills, subagents and MCP support. Its main limits are the credit-based quotas and a strong tie to the JetBrains ecosystem.
Pros
- Uses JetBrains code intelligence
