What is Devin?
What it is
Devin is the autonomous software engineering agent from Cognition. You assign it a task from the web app, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Linear or Jira, and it works on its own cloud machine with an editor, shell and browser, then opens a pull request for you to review. It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket and custom Git providers. Cognition also acquired Windsurf, and Devin's plans now cover both the cloud agent and the desktop editor experience, with cloud agent access starting on the Pro plan.
Key features
- Ticket in, pull request out: Devin plans, codes, runs tests and submits changes
- Its own sandboxed cloud environment with shell, editor and browser
- Integrations with Slack, Teams, Linear, Jira and the major Git hosts
- Knowledge: persistent notes on coding standards, deployment steps or internal tools, recalled automatically when relevant
- Playbooks: reusable, shareable prompts for repeated tasks
- A Devin MCP server that lets other MCP-compatible agents and IDEs manage Devin sessions, playbooks and knowledge
Skills, subagents and MCP
Devin reads AGENTS.md from your repository before it starts coding. MCP servers, plugins, skills, hooks and rules are managed from its Customize settings at personal, organisation or enterprise scope. The recommended way to add an integration is to install a plugin from the marketplace; most official plugins are a single MCP server, often with skills that teach Devin how to use it.
Pricing
At the time of writing (September 2026), Devin lists a Free plan with a light agent quota, Pro at $20 a month with higher quotas, frontier models and cloud agents, Max at $200 a month with much higher quotas, Team at $80 a month plus $40 per full developer seat, and custom Enterprise pricing with SSO and dedicated deployment options. Check the pricing page for current quotas, which have changed several times this year.
Who it is for
Engineering teams with a backlog of well-defined work such as bug fixes, migrations, dependency upgrades and test coverage, who want to delegate tasks from their issue tracker or chat and review the resulting pull requests.
Verdict
Devin is one of the most complete autonomous coding agents, with strong integrations and good support for AGENTS.md, MCP and skills. It performs best on clearly scoped tickets and less well on vague requests, and heavy use on quota-based plans can push teams towards the more expensive tiers.
Pros
- Fully autonomous: ticket in, pull request out
- Integrates with Slack, Linear and Jira
- Good at well-scoped chores and migrations
Cons
- Needs clear tickets; weaker on vague tasks
- Heavy use needs the higher-priced plans
