What is Factory?
What it is
Factory builds Droid, an AI agent platform for software development. The pitch is delegation: you hand Droid a task, review the diff, and merge, then scale from single sessions up to automated workflows across the whole development lifecycle. Droid runs in the Factory desktop app, the Droid CLI in your terminal, the web and mobile browsers, and on Droid Computers for headless execution. The company's website now lives at factory.com.
The CLI is installed with Homebrew on macOS and Linux or npm on Windows, according to the quickstart; check the docs for the exact current command.
Key features
- Propose-and-review workflow: Droid shows the exact diff and waits for approval before editing
- Missions for coordinating multi-step, multi-agent work, started with
/missions - Specification mode for planning larger changes before implementation
- Droid Exec for headless runs in scripts and CI/CD pipelines
- Built-in slash commands such as
/review,/modeland/sessions - Enterprise controls including SSO, audit logging, zero data retention and data residency options on higher tiers
Skills, subagents and MCP
Droid reads AGENTS.md for repository instructions. Custom Droids act as subagents for scoped, repeatable jobs. It connects to MCP servers for tools such as Jira, Notion, Slack, Linear and PagerDuty, and the docs also cover skills, plugins, hooks, custom slash commands and connectors. Factory stresses model independence, so organisations are not tied to one LLM vendor.
Pricing
At the time of writing (September 2026), there is no free tier listed. Pro costs $20 per month, Plus $100 per month (about 5x Pro usage, with Droid Computers), and Max $200 per month (about 10x Pro). Teams costs $60 per month plus $40 per seat for up to 10 seats; Business and Enterprise are custom-priced.
Who it is for
Engineering teams that want to delegate whole tickets, migrations and reviews to agents while keeping approval steps and governance. Individual developers can use Pro, but the product's strengths are its team and enterprise controls.
Verdict
Factory is a serious option for organisations moving from assisted coding to delegated work, with broad support for AGENTS.md, MCP, custom droids, skills and hooks. Hobbyists will find cheaper and simpler tools, and there is no free plan to try it.
Pros
- Works across terminal, IDE, Slack and CI
- Team and enterprise controls
- Custom droids for repeatable jobs
Cons
- Aimed more at teams than hobbyists
- Pricing based on usage tokens
