What is Firebase Studio?
Status note: Google is sunsetting Firebase Studio on 22 March 2027, and new workspaces can no longer be created. Google points users to Google AI Studio and Google Antigravity and provides migration documentation for moving existing code.
What it is
Firebase Studio is Google's browser-based development workspace for building full-stack and AI apps with Gemini. It combined a cloud code editor with an App Prototyping agent that could create an app from natural language or mockups, and it connected directly to Firebase services for backend features and deployment. Existing users can keep working in their workspaces until the shutdown date.
Key features
- Gemini assistance for writing, debugging, testing and documenting code
- App Prototyping agent that builds apps from prompts and mockups
- Import existing repositories from GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket or a local machine
- Built-in web previews and Android emulators for testing
- Real-time collaboration in shared workspaces
- Deployment through Firebase App Hosting, Firebase Hosting or Cloud Run
Skills, subagents and MCP
The listing records MCP support, but with the product winding down there is little reason to invest in new integrations here. Any agent configuration you rely on should be recreated in the tool you migrate to.
Pricing
Firebase Studio has been free during its preview, with a limited number of workspaces (more for Google Developer Program members). Firebase and Google Cloud services used by your app are billed separately under their own pricing. Since new workspaces cannot be created, pricing matters mainly for existing projects until March 2027.
Who it is for
Only existing users who need to finish work and migrate. New projects should start in one of the tools Google recommends or in another app builder.
Verdict
Firebase Studio was a generous free option with tight Firebase integration, emulators and a capable prototyping agent. With the shutdown announced and new workspaces blocked, it is no longer a sensible choice. If you have projects there, export your code to a Git provider well before 22 March 2027 and follow Google's migration guidance to move to Google AI Studio or Antigravity.
