What is Warp?
What it is
Warp began as a fast, Rust-based terminal and is now an agentic development environment: a modern terminal plus agents that write and refactor code, debug problems and run multi-step tasks while you stay in control. It runs on macOS, Linux and Windows. Warp's client is open source under AGPL v3. Beyond the desktop app there is a standalone Warp Agent CLI for any terminal or SSH session, and cloud agents that run in the background on events or schedules.
Key features
- Switch between normal terminal use and a dedicated agent conversation view
- Built-in code editor with a file tree and LSP support, plus code review of agent diffs
- Warp Drive for shared notebooks, workflows and team knowledge
- Runs third-party CLI agents such as Claude Code, Codex and OpenCode inside the terminal
- Access to models from several providers on paid plans
Skills, subagents and MCP
Warp supports MCP servers for connecting agents to external tools. Its Rules feature has global rules and project rules; project rules live in an AGENTS.md file (WARP.md is still read for backwards compatibility), and Warp applies the file in the repository root and in the current directory. Warp also supports skills: reusable instruction files that agents discover and use automatically, which complement always-on rules.
Pricing
At the time of writing (September 2026), Warp has a Free plan with core terminal features, the Agent CLI and limited cloud agents, and the option to bring your own AI inference. Build costs $20 per month ($18 billed annually) with 1,500 credits; Max costs $200 per month ($180 annually) with 18,000 credits. Business is $50 per user per month ($45 annually) for up to 25 seats, with SAML SSO and custom inference endpoints, and Enterprise is custom.
Who it is for
Developers who live in the terminal and want agents in the same window as their commands, and teams that want shared workflows and rules. It is also a convenient host if you run several CLI agents side by side.
Verdict
Warp is a very good terminal even with AI switched off, and its agent, rules, skills and MCP support make it a capable all-in-one environment. Heavy agent use runs on credits, and cloud features need an account.
