About Awesome GitHub Copilot
What it does
Awesome GitHub Copilot is a community collection of customisations for GitHub Copilot. It is hosted in the official github organisation. It gathers custom agents, instruction files, skills, hooks, agentic workflows and plugins that change how Copilot behaves in your editor and in the Copilot CLI. A companion website, awesome-copilot.github.com, adds full-text search, filters and a Learning Hub of guides. A machine-readable llms.txt file lets agents browse the catalogue as well.
What is inside
- Agents: specialised Copilot agents, many of them wired to MCP servers
- Instructions: coding standards that apply automatically by file pattern
- Skills: self-contained folders with instructions and bundled assets, in the Agent Skills format
- Plugins: curated bundles of agents and skills for a particular workflow, installable from the Awesome Copilot marketplace
- Cookbook: copy-and-paste recipes for working with Copilot APIs
- Learning Hub: articles on agents, skills, instructions, hooks, agentic workflows, MCP and the Copilot coding agent
Works with
GitHub Copilot in VS Code and the Copilot CLI. The skills follow the open SKILL.md format and could be copied into other agents, but the repository is organised and documented around Copilot.
How to install
Recent Copilot CLI and VS Code versions already know the marketplace, so you install a plugin by name. On older setups, register the marketplace first:
copilot plugin marketplace add github/awesome-copilot
copilot plugin install <plugin-name>@awesome-copilot
Individual agents, instructions and skills can also be copied into your repository by hand.
Maintenance and safety
MIT licensed and updated daily by a large group of contributors. The README warns that the customisations come from third-party developers and should be inspected before installing. Hooks and some skills can run commands, and agents may connect to external MCP servers.
Who should use it
Teams standardising on GitHub Copilot who want ready-made agents, coding rules and skill bundles instead of writing their own from scratch.
Pros
- Hosted in the github organisation with a searchable website and Learning Hub
- Plugins install directly from the Copilot CLI marketplace
Cons
- Third-party contributions vary in quality and need review before use
