What is Trae?
What it is
TRAE is an AI coding product from ByteDance. Its coding line, TraeCode, includes an AI IDE with a chat mode, an agent mode that plans and makes multi-file changes, and SOLO mode, where the agent drives more of the work end to end. ByteDance also offers TraeWork, a separate AI work assistant. TRAE competes strongly on price, with a free plan and paid tiers that bundle a monthly usage allowance.
Key features
- Agent mode for planning and executing multi-file changes from a prompt
- SOLO mode for more autonomous, end-to-end task handling
- Autocomplete, with unlimited use on paid plans
- Concurrent cloud tasks on paid plans (up to 10 on Pro, 20 on Ultra)
- A choice of built-in models plus custom models
- Custom agents you can create and manage
Skills, subagents and MCP
TRAE supports MCP servers and has an MCP marketplace of community servers. If you have already configured MCP in another IDE, you can reuse it by pasting the JSON into .trae/mcp.json in your project. Project rules are supported, and TRAE is compatible with AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md and CLAUDE.local.md, which are brought in when you import a Claude Code project. Agent Skills have launched in SOLO mode, loading on demand rather than filling the context window like rules; check the docs for current support in the regular IDE.
Pricing
At the time of writing (September 2026): Free with Auto mode only, limited usage and 5,000 autocompletes a month; Pro at $20 per month with all models and $20 of monthly usage; Pro+ at $60 with $60 of usage; and Ultra at $200 with $200 of usage and early model access. Yearly billing saves 17%. Enterprise customers are directed to BytePlus.
Who it is for
Price-conscious developers who want a capable agentic IDE, and people moving from Claude Code or another IDE who want their rules and MCP setup to carry over.
Verdict
TRAE offers a lot for the money, with MCP, AGENTS.md compatibility and skills in SOLO mode. Some organisations will have data-handling questions about a ByteDance product, and its community and third-party ecosystem are smaller than Cursor's.
Pros
- Low price and a free plan
- Builder mode for whole features
- MCP support
Cons
- Data-handling questions for some organisations
- Smaller community
