What is Devin Desktop (formerly Windsurf)?
What it is
Windsurf, the AI code editor known for its Cascade agent, has been renamed Devin Desktop. Cognition, the company behind the Devin agent, acquired Windsurf and in 2026 pushed an update that changed the name; windsurf.com now redirects to devin.ai/desktop. Existing plans, extensions and settings carried over automatically. The product is still a full IDE with syntax highlighting, autocomplete and debugging, but its focus has shifted to managing fleets of local and cloud agents from one screen.
Key features
- Agent management: plan, delegate and review work from local and cloud agents inside the editor
- Devin Local, the local agent that succeeds Cascade and keeps its core capabilities and settings
- Spaces for sharing context and Git worktrees across agents
- Tab completions and inline edits, unlimited on all plans
- Access to Cognition's SWE models and frontier models on paid plans
- A free plan that still includes the full editor
Skills, subagents and MCP
Devin Desktop supports MCP servers and language servers for integrations such as Linear, Slack, Notion, Stripe and Datadog. The Devin agent documentation says it reads AGENTS.md and supports rules and skills for persistent context and reusable workflows. Because the product changed recently, check the current docs before relying on older Windsurf features such as Cascade hooks or workflows.
Pricing
Pricing now sits on devin.ai. At the time of writing (September 2026): Free ($0) with a light agent quota, limited models and unlimited Tab completions; Pro at $20 per month with higher quotas and frontier models; Max at $200 per month; Teams at $80 per month plus $40 per developer seat; and custom Enterprise plans.
Who it is for
Existing Windsurf users, and developers who want an editor that doubles as a control centre for several coding agents, including Devin in the cloud.
Verdict
The editor is still capable and has a usable free plan, but it is no longer the Cascade-centred Windsurf many people signed up for. If you are choosing today, evaluate it as Devin Desktop, a multi-agent workspace, and confirm which Windsurf-era features you rely on still exist.
Pros
- Cascade agent is good at following your context
- Free plan available
- MCP and rules support
Cons
- Renamed and folded into Devin: features and plans are still changing
- Smaller extension ecosystem than Cursor
